Is there an organic/green alternative to Roundup herbicide for a large scale application?

We have large property full of very tenacious weeds and our landscaper is recommending treating with Roundup before laying new sod. I'm uncomfortable with using Roundup if there is any sort of viable alternative that is a little less damaging to the environment and possibly my family's heath.
