Giardia... is it ok to be left untreated for a time?

I am in West Africa doing a field study, and after some research, I'm almost certain I have giardia. I'm hesitant to visit the local doctor because of previous visits... As it is not life-threatening and the microbes go into a period of dormancy eventually, I'm considering riding it out until I return to the States in August, when I'll seek treatment. Anyone have advice?
