Why succession allows and ecosystem to recover after a primary disturbance?

fast recruiting species become established quickly which provides food resources for consumers. fast recruiters are only better competitors in the short term, so more durable species replace them. according to the intermediate disturbance hypothesis this process maximises diversity, which is good for an ecosystem as higher diversity increases the likelihood that when the next disturbance occurs there will be enough survivors to begin recruitment again.
