Smoking. What do you call these things?

In old movies, you'd often see rich people with a long rod, at the end of which would be a cigarette, and they'd breathe in the smoke through the rod, instead of using the end of the cigarette. What do you call these things? I'm writing a book, and one of my characters will smoke just about anything, but he hates pipes, and he hates the aforementioned thing. So what do you call it?
